Botox®, Dysport® & Xeomin®: Frequently Asked Questions
What are Botox®, Dysport®, and Xeomin®?
They are different brands of injectable botulinum toxin type A. These prescription medications temporarily reduce activity in selected muscles to soften the appearance of expression lines. Each has its own formulation, dosing, and approved uses.
What is the difference between Botox®, Dysport®, and Xeomin®?
These are all wrinkle relaxers but are made by different companies. Xeomin® is formulated without accessory complexing proteins. Their units are not interchangeable, so the same number of units does not represent an equivalent dose across brands.
Which treatment is best for me?
There is no single best choice for everyone. Your provider will consider the treatment area, muscle activity, medical history, previous response, and desired outcome when recommending a product and dose.
What areas can be treated?
Common cosmetic treatment areas include the frown lines between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead lines, and crow's feet around the eyes. Botox® can also soften prominent platysma bands which helps define the jawline.
Beyond cosmetic treatments, Botox can be used medically to help prevent headaches in adults with chronic migraine and manage excessive underarm sweating (hyperhidrosis). It may also help reduce jaw muscle tension and discomfort associated with teeth grinding and clenching (bruxism); this is an off-label use requiring an individual assessment.
How long do Botox®, Dysport®, and Xeomin® last?
Results commonly last approximately three to four months, although duration varies by product, dose, treatment area, and individual response. Your maintenance schedule should be based on your assessment and the product used.
How quickly will I notice results?
Changes generally begin within the first several days and continue developing over the following weeks. Results are not immediate, and the timing varies between products and individuals. At Lips & Lines+, we generally assess your response at a two-week follow-up.
Will I look frozen?
Your treatment plan can aim to soften lines while preserving some movement. The amount of movement remaining depends on the dose, injection placement, anatomy, and your response. Discuss how much expression you would like to retain during your consultation.
Are Botox®, Dysport®, and Xeomin® the same as dermal fillers?
No. Neuromodulators reduce muscle activity, while dermal fillers add volume or support to selected areas. They address different concerns and may sometimes be included in the same treatment plan.
How many units will I need?
Your dose depends on the product, treatment area, muscle strength, and desired result. Because units differ between brands, comparing unit counts or prices per unit alone can be misleading. Your consultation will establish the recommended treatment and total cost.
Do the injections hurt?
You may feel brief pinching or stinging at the injection sites. Temporary tenderness, redness, swelling, or bruising can occur. Your provider can discuss comfort measures before treatment.
What are the possible side effects?
Side effects can include bruising, headache, tenderness at the site of injection. Your provider will review the relevant risks before treatment.
Who may not be suitable for treatment?
Treatment may not be appropriate for people with an infection at the injection site, or certain neuromuscular conditions. Tell your provider about all medications, previous botulinum toxin treatments, pregnancy, and breastfeeding before booking treatment.
